Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been coughing for at least 6 months. White phlem. When I wake it s a violent cough to the point where I almost throw up. When I breath in it s a high pitched noise. My lungs hurt due to the excess coughing. It gets a little better during the day but never goes away.
Morning cough with sputum can point to a variety of different problems. To allay your anxiety, I suggest you visit your nearest Clinical Pathology lab plus diagnostic center and do the following tests . Also read about the rationales explained below for every test- 1. Sputum for Acid Fast Bacilli. To rule out Tuberculosis. This is the most common cause of Chronic cough with sputum and probable coughing up of blood lasting more than 3 weeks. There is nothing to be alarmed. It's just to rule out an easily treatable infection that if left untreated can lead to complications. 2. Chest X Ray to rule out any Pneumonic patches. 3. Pulmonary function tests to rule out any allergic Bronchitis or Asthma. If none of the above is contributory, you just need to inhale steam and take some Expectorant like Dextrokuff. Since you are going to need your GP's help to write these tests for you as well as the Expectorant, Get in touch with your GP. GODSPEED !
